Narcissism is one of the great building blocks of religion and it basically means admiring yourself and thinking you are important even though there is no real reason to think so. If humans viewed themselves through the lens of the great equality of life, whereby humans are worth no more nor less than a salamander or mushroom, there would be no such thing as religion.
We can see this in the bible, where God is portrayed as actually asking man to “test” Him with our tithes and offerings, the idea that my 20 dollar gift is so important that the very gates of heaven will open:
- “10 Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in my house, and thus put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts; see if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you an overflowing blessing. (Malachi 3:10)“
In fact, we even view our ignorance as the supreme defense of a God who is so obviously guilty of depraved indifference murder for such things as childhood cancer, earthquakes, and hurricanes:
